چکیده

In this note, we present a self-contained proof of the following property in tree-structured graphs, including trees, junction trees, and hypertrees: The global joint distribution of any tree-structured graph factorizes in terms of the local marginal distributions. In tree-structured graphs, this property plays a central role in the proof of many properties, which are unique to trees amongst all arbitrary graph topologies. These properties include, but not limited to:

Bounds on marginal probability distributions

We propose a novel bound on single-variable marginal probability distributions in factor graphs with discrete variables. The bound is obtained by propagating local bounds (convex sets of probability distributions) over a subtree of the factor graph, rooted in the variable of interest. By construction, the method not only bounds the exact marginal probability distribution of a variable, but also...

Computing the joint distribution of the total tree length across loci in populations with variable size.

In recent years, a number of methods have been developed to infer complex demographic histories, especially historical population size changes, from genomic sequence data. Coalescent Hidden Markov Models have proven to be particularly useful for this type of inference. Due to the Markovian structure of these models, an essential building block is the joint distribution of local genealogical tre...

Exact inference and learning for cumulative distribution functions on loopy graphs

Abstract Many problem domains including climatology and epidemiology require models that can capture both heavy-tailed statistics and local dependencies. Specifying such distributions using graphical models for probability density functions (PDFs) generally lead to intractable inference and learning. Cumulative distribution networks (CDNs) provide a means to tractably specify multivariate heavy...

A generalization of Norton's theorem

A general framework for aggregation and decomposition of product form queueing networks with state dependent routing and servicing is presented. By analogy with electrical circuit theory, the stations are grouped into clusters or subnetworks such that the process decomposes into a global process and a local process. Moreover, the local process factorizes into the subnetworks. The global process...

Distributions of the Ratios of Independent Kumaraswamy Variables and System Reliability Applications

‎In this article‎, ‎first of all‎, ‎the Kumaraswamy distribution is introduced‎. ‎Then‎, ‎the joint and marginal distributions of W = X1/X2 and T = X1/X1+X2 where X1 and X2 are independent Kumaraswamy random variables‎, ‎are obtained and the moments of these random variables are computed‎. ‎The distribution of random variables  W  and T  can be used in reliability studies and statistical models...
